artist: SueAnne Lawhorn Merrill
SueAnne has been a seamstress since her teens. Just out of high school, she began doing historical costuming as part of her involvement with the Society for Creative Anachronism. In her early thirties, she spent several years experimenting with fabric marblng, creating marbled t-shirts and wall-hangings.
In search of a “firmer” medium, she took her first ceramic sculpture class at the Washington Heights Arts Center in Lakewood, Colorado, in 2005, and was immediately hooked. An Intro to Raku class at the Center, under instructor Jim Chamberlain, sparked her interest in this firing method, and she currently raku-fires over half of her work. She’s currently taking a Sculpture Symposium at Wash. Hts., which is helping to expand her view of the possible in sculpture – including working in concrete!
